I don't know about you but I feel this year needs to be about self-care. It's a fact that we can tend to others much better when we are in a happy and healthy place ourselves. But how do we get there when we're consumed by everyday life?
Let's Talk about self-care for a minute. What does it even mean and is it really all about:
- getting a massage every once in a while
- getting your nails done
- working out
- eating well
- asking someone else to empty the dishwasher occasionally
- going out for lunch to a really nice restaurant
Sure, these are very important components of it all. We pamper ourselves on Mother's Day, our Birthdays and maybe a few other holidays throughout the year. Oh yes, there's also that good old trusty New Year's resolution ready to jump in whenever we fail to continue taking care of ourselves.
But shouldn't self-care be much more and shouldn't it start with us?
Shouldn't it be something we do every day? It should, for sure, but it requires a shift in mindset that challenges deep laying notions of making sure everyone else is ok before we look at ourselves. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not to make you turn into a knife wielding super bitch.
I want to encourage ourselves to shift our mindset and take back and own our space within our families and society.
We can't just say it, we have to believe that we deserve all the good things that come our way and when they come let’s be ready and accept what the universe has given us with open arms. I'll say it again: WE NEED TO MEAN IT.
As a photographer I believe everyone deserves to be seen and heard. And that's where me and my camera come in!
The art of photography has always been a means to chronicle people and life around us. We used to collect those special fragments of our lives to give us a gateway into reliving and recording the memories we cherish. We pasted the photographs in albums, that turned into priceless treasures which were handed down from one generation to the next.
Even before photography was a thing, images of people and places were hung on walls throughout the home. It was a way to honor the ones that are important to us.
Let me ask you this: When did we as a society decide that mom's portrait doesn’t belong up on those walls? Isn’t it time to reclaim that space for us and our mothers and daughters?
We say it is! The answer to all change lies within us. Ask and you shall receive – or maybe just go ahead and do it!
I believe that your portraits need to be up on the walls in your home because your story deserves to be told.
Us mothers need to step out of the shadows of everyday work as the breadwinner, the nurse, the cheerleader, the therapist, the crafter, the homemaker, the keeper of the hearth.
Self-care is not just about that massage, that nail salon appointment and a good dinner.
It’s also about truly seeing our worth and celebrating who we are today, where we came from and where we're going. All of us are art, with sparkles, cracks and all.
Let me celebrate you!
